Ari Ben Zayn was a Colonel in Earthforce, attached to Earthforce's Internal Affairs division, at least until his attempt to usurp Jeffrey Sinclair's post as Commander of Babylon 5.

He and Psi Corps liason Harriman Gray were on Babylon 5 during 2258 to investigate the loyalty of the Babylon 5 staff after several major incidents involving the station. The investigation was arranged by Psi Cop Alfred Bester, who held a grudge against Sinclair after the Jason Ironheart affair, an incident that resulted in the accidental death one of Bester's fellow Psi Cops.[1]

Originally considered one of the front-runners for the post of Babylon 5's Commanding Officer, Ben Zayn was rejected because the Minbari wanted Sinclair instead. Since then, he resolved to get the command any way he could, in the strong belief he would deserve it.

Ultimately, his attempt to depose Sinclair failed, as Gray was convinced to scan Ben Zayn instead of Sinclair, and realized the plot that Bester and Ben Zayn had set up.[2]
