The League of Non-Aligned Worlds was a collection of independent alien worlds which for various reasons had banded together for mutual military support, diplomacy and trade. Membership in the League was flexible and was constantly changing in response to the shifting circumstances and events in the galaxy. However, by 2259 the number of League Worlds usually averaged around fourteen.

When combined, the League worlds were, in terms of power, second only to the likes of the Minbari, Centauri, Humans and the Narn. The League was fractious and often was subject to petty internal rivalries and in times of open conflict suffered from a strange combination of insecurities and complacent inaction with many of its members, mainly the Drazi, the Brakiri, and the Gaim, refusing to commit to anything out of fear, then suddenly demanding action, fearing for their own planetary security.

History

In 2228, the Dilgar launched a massive war of conquest and genocide against all of its neighbours, including many members of the League. They resisted but was nearly overwhelmed, until 2230 when the Earth Alliance agreed to aid the League and helped drive back the Dilgar.[1]

In 2257 the League signed on to the Babylon Project, with all League worlds assigning Ambassadors to Babylon 5, though only ten of them would sit in Assembly at any one time. By agreement, the League received only a single collective vote in a Full Assembly of the Babylon 5 Advisory Council and were often more or less at the mercy of the major powers, something League worlds are acutely aware of.

In 2261 after Sheridan went to Z'ha'dum, members of the League, convinced he was dead and his mission a failure, refused to participate in any more join military operations against the Shadows, for fear of retaliation. The League temporarily dissolved with the former members voting to look after themselves. When Sheridan returned, the League reformed and rejoined the Army of Light and was victorious alongside them. After the war, the League was eventually dissolved in 2262 in favour of the Interstellar Alliance.[2]
