The League of Non-Aligned Worlds had been a loose confederation of independent worlds and minor species formerly subject to the Centauri Republic. The League of Non-Aligned Worlds was created to maintain a united front against a possible Centauri resurgence and protection from the expanding Narn Regime. The League's charter took on new meaning with the rise of the Dilgar, who launched a massive war of conquest and genocide against all of its neighbors. The League resisted but was nearly overwhelmed, until the Earth Alliance agreed to aid the League and helped drive back the Dilgar.

As a result, the League cemented its reputation as a force which could influence at least one of the major powers. However, the League was fractious and often was subject to petty internal rivalries. It also suffered from a strange combination of insecurities and complacent inaction with many of its members, mainly the Drazi, the Brakiri, and the Gaim, refusing to commit to anything out of fear, then suddenly demanding action and afraid for planetary security. On the Advisory Council of the Babylon Station the League was represented by delegates from each member world, which as a group must come to a consensus to cast one vote on behalf of the entire League. In comparison, each of the other major powers was represented by a single individual with one vote.

The League of Non-Aligned Worlds was a collection of independent alien worlds which for various reasons had banded together for mutual military support, diplomacy and trade. Membership in the League was flexible and was constantly changing in response to the shifting circumstances and events in the galaxy. However, by 2259 the number of League Worlds usually averaged around fourteen.

When combined, the League worlds were, in terms of power, second only to the likes of the Minbari, Centauri, Humans and the Narn. The League was fractious and often was subject to petty internal rivalries and in times of open conflict suffered from a strange combination of insecurities and complacent inaction with many of its members, mainly the Drazi, the Brakiri, and the Gaim, refusing to commit to anything out of fear, then suddenly demanding action, fearing for their own planetary security.

History

In 2230, the Dilgar launched the Dilgar War of conquest and genocide against all of their neighbours, including many members of the League. They resisted but were nearly overwhelmed, until the Earth Alliance agreed to aid the League and helped drive back the Dilgar.[1]

In 2257, the League signed on to the Babylon Project, with all League worlds assigning Ambassadors to Babylon 5, though only ten of them would sit in Assembly at any one time. By agreement, the League received only a single collective vote in a Full Assembly of the Babylon 5 Advisory Council and were often more or less at the mercy of the major powers, something League worlds are acutely aware of.

In 2259, after the end of the Narn-Centauri War, the Centauri initiated numerous border skirmishes with League Worlds and annexed additional space in order to solidify their hold on territory seized.[2] After the arrival of the Shadows in 2260, the League Worlds began a series of border wars between members, all motivated by the Shadows. This was effectively brought to a halt by the open attack of the Shadows and the signing of the Babylon Treaty.[3][4]

In 2261, after Sheridan went to Z'ha'dum, members of the League, convinced he was dead and his mission a failure, refused to participate in any more joint military operations against the Shadows for fear of retaliation. The League temporarily dissolved with the former members voting to look after themselves. When Sheridan returned, the League reformed and rejoined the Army of Light and was victorious alongside them. After the Second Shadow War, the League was eventually dissolved in 2262 in favour of the Interstellar Alliance.[5]
