Operation Sudden Death Logistics[]

Something odd about the cover story they used for Operation Sudden Death in the episode GROPOS.  It is strongly implied that these troops are being moved out from home base (the big guy with 30 years of soldiering lost his long term buddy in the Mars rebellion, Yang is completely green, they are all well rested and rowdy (soldiers coming off the front line tend to be a bit less enthusiastic in bar fights than the ones who haven't seen real action recently)....so it's pretty safe to conclude that these troops are heading out from Earth or Mars - the core of Earthforce territory.  The exact coordinates of Babylon 5 are never given, but we know simply from the fact that it's orbiting Epsilon III that it's in a different solar system, which places it at least 4.25 light years from Earth (the Alpha Centauri system is the closest system to Earth...named for the Centaur constellation it's found in, not the B5 species).  Given that B5 is supposed to be in "neutral territory," that implies it's actually much further out.  Given that Io is mere light minutes (hours?) from Earth and Mars, the cover story about these troops being in transit from Earth to Io is kinda absurd.  Especially when you factor in the fact that a space transit hub has very little use for ground troops - 25 000 soldiers is not the kind of force you'd move to a station like Io permanently.  A frontier colony near Centauri or Narn space would be a much more reasonable cover story - in any war, neutral parties tend to mobilize their troops on the borders with the aggressors.  (Or, in some cases, send promises to do their banking for them....the Swiss are the notable exception to that rule).

Then again, given the stories that get told about military logistics, maybe Straczynski was making an exceedingly subtle joke that Earthforce is so out of touch that they consider the idea of moving troops from Earth to Io by way of Babylon 5 a reasonable approach and thus consider it a viable cover story.
